12/7/11--SDS vs. YAL debate!

MSU SDS debated the newly formed chapter of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) on Wednesday, December 7th in an occupied room in the Student Center. The debate was held as a town-hall style, with both sides taking questions from members in the audience. Esha Kallianpur was the moderator.

YAL is a libertarian group on campus. Although very different, SDS and YAL do agree on certain issues—such as ending the wars and foreign occupations, achieving justice in Palestine, ending the drug wars and legalizing marijuana, and defending freedom of speech. However SDS and YAL have conflicting beliefs about what institutions are responsible for today’s issues and how to resolve them.

This debate was important for both the students and the community because it involved two very different groups discussing their differences and beliefs. It also helped students realize the complexities of today’s issues.

The event was not registered through the “event scheduling system” and both student groups practiced their freedom of expression through public debate, without being limited by regulations set by the administration.

About 20 people showed up to watch the debate, with groups of people supporting each side. Overall, the structure of the debate inhibited discussion between the two groups, and instead placed the groups in polarized positions where they felt obligated to attack one another. However, the event was successful because it got attention for both SDS and YAL, and it allowed members within SDS and YAL refine their thinking about certain issues.
